The back-to-school season often brings a familiar scramble of lost shoes, cold breakfasts, and raised voices. But one parenting therapist argues that the morning madness does not have to be the default. Instead of fighting the clock, she suggests families focus on small, intentional changes that build predictability and reduce stress.
The first tip is simple: add a buffer. Most parents underestimate how long tasks actually take. By waking up just ten minutes earlier, you create a cushion for spills, dawdling, or a sudden search for a missing permission slip. This extra time prevents the entire household from starting the day in a panic.
Another key strategy is building a "launch pad" by the front door. This is a dedicated spot where backpacks, lunch boxes, shoes, and coats live every night. When everything has a home, the frantic last-minute hunt disappears. The therapist also recommends prepping what you can the night before. Laying out clothes, packing lunches, and signing forms in the evening shifts the workload away from the morning rush.
She also warns against multitasking during breakfast. Instead of scrolling through a phone or packing a bag while kids eat, sit with them. This focused presence sets a calm tone and helps children feel seen before they head out the door. Finally, she advises parents to stop trying to be perfect. Some mornings will still be messy. The goal is not a flawless routine, but a consistent one that leaves everyone feeling a little more ready for the day ahead.
