Brooding: If Teens Don’t Date, Is It Really a Problem?

For decades, the teenage years were practically defined by the ritual of dating. The nervous phone call, the awkward movie night, the slow dance at the homecoming game. Parents worried about curfews, and teens worried about who would ask whom. But a growing number of adolescents are simply opting out. And the real question is not whether they are missing out, but whether our collective panic about it is misplaced.

The cultural obsession with teen romance often rests on a shaky assumption: that being chosen by a peer is a necessary step toward self-worth. We treat the first crush, the first breakup, and the first messy relationship as essential training grounds for adult intimacy. But the data suggests that teens today are not lonely or broken. They are just busy. Between academic pressure, extracurriculars, and the exhausting work of managing a digital social life, dating often feels like an extra chore rather than a milestone.

What is more telling is that many teens say they are simply not interested. Not because they are afraid, but because they do not see the appeal. The old script that said a person is incomplete without a partner is fading. They see the drama, the distraction, and the emotional toll, and they decide it is not worth the effort. That is not a failure of development. It is a rational choice.

The fixation on the redemptive power of being chosen might be outdated. We have long told young people that a date to prom will validate their worth. But perhaps the healthier message is that no one needs to be picked to feel whole. Solitude is not a disease. And a teenager who prefers a quiet evening with a book or a group chat with friends is not failing at life. They are simply rewriting the rules. The problem is not that teens do not date. The problem is that we cannot stop worrying about it.
