I took 30-year-old son on a vacation to Hawaii; these were the rules

A mother recently opened up about her decision to take her 30-year-old son on a vacation to Hawaii, but she did not let the trip turn into a free-for-all. She explained that her son is fully independent and lives across the country, which means they rarely get to connect in person. She thought a trip to Hawaii would be the perfect way to bridge that gap, but she also knew that traveling with an adult child comes with its own set of challenges.

To keep the experience smooth and enjoyable for both of them, she laid down a few ground rules before they even booked the flights. The rules were simple but firm. First, no phones at the dinner table. She wanted real conversation, not the kind where one person is scrolling while the other talks. Second, he had to help plan at least one activity per day. She was not going to be the only one making decisions. Third, he had to pay for his own souvenirs and any extra excursions beyond the shared itinerary. She covered the flights and the hotel, but she was clear that this was not a free ride.

The mother said the rules actually helped them avoid the awkwardness that can come when a parent and an adult child travel together. Instead of falling into old parent-child patterns, they treated each other more like equals. They hiked, they sat on the beach, and they talked about things they never get to discuss over a quick phone call. By the end of the week, she said they both felt closer. The rules, she noted, were not about control. They were about making sure the trip actually brought them together instead of pushing them apart.
