Before parenting became a buzzword and a billion-dollar industry, mothers in the 60s and 70s just raised their kids the way it made sense to raise them. They had no parenting apps, no sleep-training consultants, and no Instagram experts telling them what to do. Yet a surprising amount of what they did instinctively is now being taught to modern parents for a hefty fee.
Here are eight things those moms did without thinking, which child development specialists now spend entire workshops explaining.
First, they let kids get bored. There was no constant entertainment. A child who said "I'm bored" was handed a chore or sent outside. Experts now call this "free play" and link it to creativity and problem-solving. Second, they said "no" without guilt. They did not negotiate with a four-year-old over a cookie. Modern parenting courses teach setting firm boundaries, but these moms just did it.
Third, they made kids wait. Dinner was at six, not whenever the child felt hungry. Delayed gratification is now a hot topic in psychology. Fourth, they did not hover. Kids walked to school alone, played in the park, and came home when the streetlights came on. This is now called "risky play" and is recommended for building resilience.
Fifth, they let siblings fight it out. Unless blood was drawn, they stayed out of it. Experts now say this teaches conflict resolution. Sixth, they made kids say "thank you" and "please" to every adult, no exceptions. Politeness is now rebranded as "social emotional learning."
Seventh, they did not ask kids how they felt about everything. They did not ask if the child "wanted" to go to grandma's house. They said "get your coat." This is now called "authoritative parenting," and it is praised for creating secure attachment. Finally, they took time for themselves. They had coffee with friends and read magazines. They did not feel guilty about it. Self-care is now a multi-million dollar industry, but these moms just called it "having a minute."
The irony is that these mothers were not following a manual. They were following common sense, a bit of tradition, and the simple belief that kids are tough and will figure things out. Modern experts have taken those instincts, given them clinical names, and turned them into courses. But the core lesson remains the same: kids need less hovering and more life.
