New research reveals how information overload and pressure to get parenting right are leaving mums and dads struggling with confidence.
Only 3 percent of parents trust their parenting instincts, according to a new survey that points to a growing crisis of confidence among caregivers. The findings suggest that the constant flood of advice from books, websites, social media and well-meaning relatives is leaving many parents second-guessing every decision they make.
The study found that most parents spend hours each week searching for guidance on everything from sleep routines to discipline, yet the more they read, the less certain they feel. Experts say the sheer volume of often contradictory information creates paralysis rather than reassurance. One moment a parent reads that a strict schedule is essential, the next that flexibility is the key to a happy child. The result is a persistent fear of getting it wrong.
Researchers also highlight the role of social media, where curated images of perfect family life set unrealistic benchmarks. Parents compare their everyday struggles to someone else's highlight reel and conclude they are falling short. The pressure to be an expert on every stage of childhood has turned a natural relationship into a performance to be judged.
Psychologists behind the study argue that confidence comes from practice, not from perfect information. They recommend that parents limit their intake of advice, focus on their own child's cues and accept that mistakes are part of the process. Trusting yourself, they say, is a skill that grows with use, and no amount of scrolling can replace it.
