Governments worldwide are increasingly turning to legislation in an attempt to shield young people from the perceived dangers of the internet. Following Australia's lead, nations like France, Spain, and Malaysia are crafting plans to ban minors from social media platforms, with the United Kingdom now also considering similar restrictive measures.
While the intention to protect adolescents is commendable, such blanket bans present a flawed solution that fails to address the core challenges of modern parenting. Legislation cannot replace the nuanced, ongoing conversation required between parent and child. Social media is intricately woven into the fabric of teenage social life, serving as a primary space for connection, identity exploration, and information gathering. An outright ban risks isolating teens from their peers and driving their activity underground onto less monitored platforms, potentially creating more danger, not less.
True digital safety is not achieved through prohibition but through education and empowerment. Parents face the harder, more effective work of teaching critical thinking, guiding children on responsible online behavior, and fostering an open dialogue about content and contacts. Relying on state-mandated age gates offers a false sense of security and overlooks the parent's vital role in preparing teens to navigate the digital world independently and wisely, both now and in their future adulthood.
