Eighteen months after walking out of my first antenatal class in tears, I still carry a latent rage. The National Childbirth Trust (NCT) course, meant to prepare me for motherhood, instead left me feeling ill-prepared, isolated, and furious. The focus was almost entirely on "natural" vaginal birth, with breathing exercises, pain management techniques, and a relentless push for a drug-free experience. When I asked about the possibility of a caesarean section, the instructor brushed it off with a vague "that's a last resort." No one mentioned the reality of recovery, the emotional toll, or the fact that one in four births in the UK is by C-section.
I ended up having an emergency C-section. And the shame started immediately. Friends who had "natural" births offered unsolicited advice about "missing out" on the "real" experience. The NCT group I joined online was full of posts celebrating "empowering" water births, while I sat in silence, feeling like I had failed. This isn't just my story. It is a systemic problem. Antenatal education is failing women by treating C-sections as a footnote, not a valid birth plan. We are taught to fear the scar, not the isolation that follows. We are told to "try harder" rather than being given realistic options.
When will we stop shaming mothers for how their babies arrive? A C-section is not a cop-out. It is major surgery, often a life-saving one. The anger I carry is not about the birth itself, but about the silence that surrounded it. We deserve better. We deserve classes that prepare us for every outcome, not just the one that looks good on a birth plan. We deserve to be told that a healthy mother and baby are the only real victory, no matter how they get here.
