Not Everyone Can Play an Instrument, and That Is OK

Not Everyone Can Play an Instrument, and That Is OK

A parent recently wrote in about a difficult situation at home. Their daughter had started learning an instrument, something the mother had pushed for. The child, however, is miserable. Practice sessions turn into arguments, and the girl has said plainly that she does not want to continue. The father sees a simple answer: let her quit. The mother refuses. She believes quitting teaches the wrong lesson, that children should push through difficulty, and that giving up now will set a pattern for life.

The father disagrees. He argues that forcing a child to continue something they hate does not build character. It builds resentment. The daughter is not lazy. She gave it a fair try. She simply does not enjoy it. Music lessons can be valuable, but they are not valuable enough to justify daily misery. Not every child has to play an instrument. Some children thrive in sports, art, coding, or nothing structured at all for a while. That is fine.

The mother's concern about quitting is understandable. But there is a difference between quitting because something is hard and quitting because something is wrong for you. The daughter is not struggling with a challenge she secretly loves. She is struggling with a hobby she never wanted. The easy solution is to let her stop. The hard solution is to keep fighting about it. Sometimes the easy solution is the right one.
