As a young parent with the internet in my pocket, I can get instant advice for any situation that may arise with my toddler. At first, I saw this as a lifesaver. A quick search for "how to stop a tantrum" or "best way to introduce vegetables" usually pulls up dozens of articles, forum threads, and video tutorials. But I have learned the hard way that not all of this guidance is helpful. Some of it is actually harmful.
The problem is that online advice is often written by people with no real credentials. A popular blog might recommend a strict sleep training method that leaves a baby crying for hours, while a viral TikTok video suggests using essential oils that are dangerous for young children. The algorithm does not care about safety. It cares about engagement. So the most extreme, shocking, or emotionally charged advice gets pushed to the top.
I remember following a tip from a mommy group about using a bitter spray to stop my son from biting. The spray was supposed to be harmless, but it made him gag and cry for twenty minutes. I felt terrible. Another time, I tried a "magic" trick to get him to eat broccoli by hiding it in a brownie. He just picked out the chocolate and refused to eat anything else for the rest of the day.
The worst part is that this bad advice often comes wrapped in confident, authoritative language. It says "doctors hate this one trick" or "this method works every time." It preys on exhausted parents who just want a solution. Now, I have a new rule. I check the source. I look for actual pediatricians, child psychologists, or government health sites. And I always ask myself: Would my own mother or a trusted doctor tell me to do this? If the answer is no, I close the tab. The internet is a tool, not a parenting manual. And sometimes, the best advice is to put the phone down and trust your gut.
