Halloween is just a few days away, and while kids are getting excited for costumes and candy, parents may be bracing for sugar rushes, meltdowns and late bedtimes. A parenting coach says the holiday does not have to be a source of tension and offers simple ways to keep the whole family calm and happy.
Planning ahead is the first step. Talk with children about the schedule before the big night, including when trick-or-treating will start and end. Setting expectations early helps kids understand what is coming and reduces surprises that can lead to frustration.
Costumes can also cause stress, so let children help choose outfits that are comfortable and easy to move in. Try them on a few days early to catch any problems with fit or pieces that might get lost.
The coach suggests keeping sugar in check by offering a filling meal before candy and agreeing on how much will be eaten each day. Leftover candy can be stored out of sight rather than left in plain view.
Finally, build in downtime. A quiet morning or a relaxed afternoon before the festivities can make the evening smoother for everyone. With a little preparation, Halloween can be a treat for the entire family.
