A viral TikTok video has struck a nerve with parents nationwide. In it, a mom confesses her guilt over her older children spending most of their summer break glued to screens in their bedrooms. The clip, which shows quiet hallways and closed doors, has sparked a larger debate: should parents worry if their teens aren't filling every daylight hour with activities?
Experts say the answer is nuanced. While constant scrolling can lead to social isolation and disrupted sleep, the teenage brain also needs genuine downtime. After a demanding school year, periods of "doing nothing" are not wasted. They allow for emotional processing, creativity, and self-discovery. The concern, however, is when passive consumption replaces all other forms of engagement.
The key is balance, not panic. Instead of forcing a packed schedule, parents can set gentle boundaries. This might include a family rule for one hour of outdoor time, a shared meal without phones, or a weekly low-pressure outing. The goal is not to eliminate screen time, but to ensure teens still connect with the real world. Summer should offer a mix of rest and a little bit of stretch, not a guilt trip for either parent or child.
