Returning To Work With PPD Is Its Own Kind Of Hard

For many new mothers, the end of maternity leave feels less like a fresh start and more like a forced march into a fog. Returning to work while managing postpartum depression is a quiet struggle that often goes unseen, especially in a world that expects women to "bounce back" both physically and emotionally.

The challenge is not just about leaving a baby at home. It is about trying to focus on spreadsheets and emails while your brain is flooded with anxiety, guilt, and exhaustion. For those working remotely, the lines blur even further. The home office becomes a place where you are never fully present as a mother and never fully productive as an employee. You might find yourself muting a call to soothe a crying infant, or staring at a screen unable to remember what you were supposed to do next.

Many workplaces still lack real support for this situation. A few extra weeks of leave or a generic employee assistance program number does not address the daily reality of performing a high-stakes job while your hormones and mental health are in turmoil. Mothers often feel pressure to hide their symptoms, afraid that admitting to depression will make them seem weak or unreliable.

The path forward requires more than just self-care tips. It demands honest conversations about flexible schedules, realistic workloads, and the simple acknowledgment that healing from PPD takes time. Until that changes, many women will continue to show up to work every day, doing their best to hold it all together while silently fighting a battle no one else can see.
