Single Father Suvendu Sarkar: Raising Two Children Alone After Losing Both Parents

Kolkata, India - Suvendu Sarkar never experienced a parent's love himself. Orphaned as a child, he grew up without a mother or father to guide him. Today, he is determined to give his own children what he never had. But the journey has not been easy.

"You cannot raise two children alone," people often tell him. The question follows him everywhere: Who helps with the children? Suvendu's answer is always the same. He does. He is both mother and father to his son and daughter.

His days start before sunrise. He prepares breakfast, packs lunchboxes, and gets the children ready for school. After dropping them off, he heads to work. Evenings are for homework, dinner, and bedtime stories. There is no one to share the load.

Single fathers like Suvendu face a unique kind of scrutiny. Society expects mothers to be the primary caregivers. When a man steps into that role alone, people assume he must have help. A grandmother, a sister, a neighbor. But Suvendu has none of that.

He learned parenting from scratch. No one taught him how to braid his daughter's hair or soothe a feverish child at midnight. He figured it out through trial and error. Some days are overwhelming. But he never complains.

His children are his priority. He wants them to feel loved and secure, something he never felt as a child. He works extra hours to afford their school fees and buys them small treats when he can.

People still ask the same question. Suvendu just smiles and says, "I am enough."
