The first big decision is the drop-off versus the hang-out. For younger kids, under age five, plan on staying. Bring a book or your phone, but be ready to intervene when sharing gets tough. For older kids, a drop-off is fine, but confirm it clearly beforehand. A text that says "Should I stay or go?" is not annoying; it is helpful. The host parent will appreciate the clarity.

On food, the rule is simple: assume nothing. Ask about allergies before you pack a snack. If you are hosting, offer something boring like pretzels or apple slices. Do not get creative with a new recipe. The goal is to avoid a meltdown, not to impress. Also, do not send your child with a snack that is messy or loud. Crackers that crunch are fine. Yogurt tubes are a gamble.

Finally, the end time. Always have an exit plan. When you pick up your child, do not linger for a twenty-minute chat unless the host invites you in. A quick "thank you" at the door is perfect. If your child does not want to leave, that is a sign of a good time, not an invitation to stay for dinner. Keep it short, keep it polite, and everyone gets to keep their sanity.
