SkinnyTok can dress body-shaming up as wellness, and parents do not need to wait for a child's eating habits to change before stepping in. The trend, which spreads across short video platforms, packages extreme thinness as discipline, clean eating, and self-improvement. What looks like fitness advice often carries a darker message: that smaller bodies are better bodies, and that hunger is something to be proud of.
For teenagers, whose sense of identity is still forming, this content can land hard. Algorithms reward shock and repetition, so a single curious click can lead to a feed filled with calorie counting, body checks, and before-and-after transformations. Many videos avoid explicit dieting language to slip past moderation, using coded terms and aesthetic framing instead.
Parents can help by staying curious rather than reactive. Ask what your child is watching and why certain accounts appeal to them. Watch a few videos together and talk about what the content leaves out: genetics, mental health, and the risks of restriction. Avoid commenting on your own body or your child's appearance, even casually. Instead, emphasize that food is fuel and that bodies change during adolescence.
Watch for warning signs such as skipping meals, secrecy around eating, excessive exercise, or constant mirror checking. If these appear, consult a pediatrician or a registered dietitian who specializes in adolescent nutrition. Early conversations and steady support matter more than perfect answers.
