California Campuses Launch Microgrant Program for Student Parents

Eleven California State University campuses will each receive $5,500 to create programs designed to keep pregnant and parenting students enrolled and on track to graduate. The funding comes through a microgrant initiative that recognizes how often student parents drop out because of scheduling conflicts, childcare gaps, and a lack of campus support.

The individual grants are modest, but campus leaders say the money can go a long way when it is aimed at specific barriers. Possible uses include flexible study spaces, emergency childcare vouchers, peer mentoring groups, and help navigating financial aid rules that many parenting students find confusing. Each campus will design its own approach based on local needs rather than following one statewide model.

Student parents make up a significant share of the CSU system, yet they graduate at lower rates than their classmates without children. Advocates say small, targeted investments can change that math. A reliable place to study, a few hours of paid childcare, or a staff member who understands their situation can mean the difference between finishing a degree and withdrawing.

The grants are expected to fund pilot programs through the coming academic year. Organizers hope the results will build a case for larger and more permanent funding, and that other universities will study what works. For now, the focus is on practical help delivered quickly, with each campus reporting back on how the money was spent and what changed for the students it served.
