Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, & Boomers Have Completely Different Ideas Of What Good Parenting Looks Like

A new survey reveals that the four major generations disagree sharply on the core principles of raising children. What one group sees as responsible guidance, another views as overbearing control. The divide runs deeper than simple preferences, touching on screen time, independence, and emotional support.

Boomers, who came of age in an era of latchkey kids and strict discipline, tend to value self-reliance above all. They often believe that children should learn from natural consequences and that too much praise creates entitlement. For them, a good parent sets firm boundaries and lets kids figure things out on their own.

Gen X, sometimes called the "forgotten generation," leans toward a more hands-off approach. Having grown up with less adult supervision, they prioritize teaching resilience and problem-solving. They are skeptical of helicopter parenting and prefer to give their children room to fail.

Millennials, by contrast, emphasize emotional validation and open communication. They are more likely to research parenting methods, discuss feelings with their kids, and limit screen time in favor of structured activities. Many millennials view parenting as a deliberate project, one that requires constant learning and adjustment.

Gen Z, the youngest parents, bring a digital-native perspective. They are comfortable with technology as a tool for connection and education, but they also worry about its impact on mental health. Gen Z parents tend to value authenticity and mental wellness, often rejecting harsh discipline in favor of gentle, consent-based parenting.

These differences are not just academic. They create friction in families, schools, and social circles. A grandparent may see a parent as too soft, while the parent sees the grandparent as emotionally distant. The result is a generational tug-of-war over the very definition of good parenting, with no clear winner in sight.
