Muslim parents today face a challenge unlike any generation before them: how to raise children with strong Islamic values while the digital world constantly pulls at their attention. The old model of simply banning screens no longer works. Instead, experts are promoting a concept called the "Digital Shepherd" approach, where parents guide rather than just block.
The core of this method is protecting the child's Fitra, the natural disposition toward goodness and faith. In a world of algorithms and endless scrolling, a child's Fitra is under constant assault from content that promotes materialism, vanity, and instant gratification. Parents are advised to actively curate what enters the home, not just through filters, but through open conversation. The Quran and Sunnah provide the framework, but the application must be practical.
For social media, the advice is to delay access as long as possible, and when it is allowed, to keep accounts public and follow the child. The goal is not surveillance, but presence. For AI tools like chatbots and image generators, parents must teach that these are tools, not authorities. A child should learn to ask: "Does this align with what Allah loves?" before asking "Is this cool?"
the digital age demands that parents become more present, not more technical. The smartphone is a test, and the home must be a sanctuary where the values of the Quran are lived, not just preached.
