How children raised by overly strict parents turn out later in life: The answer is an eye-opener

How children raised by overly strict parents turn out later in life: The answer is an eye-opener

Many parents believe that discipline, respect, and success can only be achieved through strict rules, rigid routines, and high expectations. Society often praises such adults as "ideal parents." But more is not always better. When strictness turns into excessive control and constant criticism, the long-term effects can be very different from what parents intend.

In the 1960s, psychologist Diana Baumrind studied children raised by overly strict parents. Her findings are quite concerning. She found that when children grow up under highly authoritarian parenting, they may appear obedient on the outside, but they remain emotionally conflicted on the inside. Here are three common patterns that often follow these children into adulthood.

First, they struggle with decision-making. Because they were never allowed to question rules or make choices, they grow up unsure of their own judgment. They may second-guess themselves constantly or rely on others to tell them what to do.

Second, they often hide their true emotions. Many learn early that showing sadness, anger, or frustration leads to punishment or disappointment. As adults, they may have trouble identifying or expressing their feelings, which can hurt their relationships.

Third, they tend to be perfectionists with a harsh inner critic. Having been held to impossibly high standards, they internalize that voice. They may fear failure so much that they avoid risks or feel anxious even when they succeed.

These patterns do not appear in every child raised strictly, but the research shows that excessive control often leaves a lasting mark. The key is balance: structure without suffocation, guidance without shame.
