“I fly business class, my children travel in economy”: Why Farah Khan practices this travel rule and 4 parenting lessons modern parents can learn from her

Every parent wants to give their child a better life than they had. But where do you draw the line between providing comfort and raising children who take that comfort for granted? Filmmaker and choreographer Farah Khan believes the answer lies in teaching children the value of privilege early.

Speaking candidly on comedian Bharti Singh's podcast, Farah shared the parenting philosophy she follows with her three kids. The conversation began when Bharti asked Farah what family holidays are like with three children, especially on long flights. Farah's answer surprised her.

"They sit at the back... in economy," Farah said. "I fly business class, the children travel in economy."

The reason, however, had nothing to do with saving money. It was about raising grounded children. Here are four parenting lessons that stand out from Farah Khan's refreshingly practical approach.

First, children do not need the same level of comfort as adults. Farah believes that flying economy teaches her kids patience and the understanding that not everything in life is handed to them. They learn to wait, to sit still, and to manage without constant entertainment.

Second, privilege should be earned, not assumed. By separating her travel experience from theirs, Farah sends a clear message: the lifestyle their parents have is not automatically theirs. It is something they must work toward.

Third, parents should not feel guilty about setting boundaries. Many modern parents struggle with guilt when they deny their children something. Farah's approach shows that saying no can be an act of love, not deprivation.

Fourth, humility starts at home. When children grow up with the same comforts as their parents, they often lose perspective. Farah's rule forces her kids to understand that the world does not revolve around them.

Farah's method may seem strict to some, but it reflects a growing concern among parents: how to raise children who are grateful, resilient, and aware of their place in the world. In an age of helicopter parenting and constant indulgence, her approach offers a simple but powerful reminder. Sometimes the best gift you can give your child is the chance to sit in the back and learn to wait.
