As the school year winds down, many parents start to dread the inevitable chorus of "I'm bored." The pressure to fill every waking hour with camps, playdates, and screen time can feel overwhelming. But one parenting coach is pushing back against that frantic mindset, arguing that a little summer boredom is not just okay, it's actually essential for a child's development.
The coach explains that when kids are constantly entertained, they never learn to sit with their own thoughts or tap into their natural creativity. Boredom, she says, is the spark that ignites imagination. It forces a child to invent a game, build a fort, or write a story, skills that structured activities simply can't teach. Instead of viewing the whiny complaint as a problem to solve, parents can reframe it as an invitation for their child to take ownership of their free time.
Of course, this doesn't mean abandoning kids to stare at a wall all day. The coach suggests setting up a loose framework, like having a few basic art supplies and outdoor toys available, and then stepping back. The real challenge for parents is to resist the urge to immediately fix the boredom with a new activity or a tablet. By allowing those stretches of unstructured time, kids learn patience, resilience, and how to entertain themselves. So this summer, when the boredom complaints start, it might be worth taking a breath and letting the quiet moments do their work. The result could be a more resourceful, self-directed child, and a less stressed-out parent.
