Parenting: Why the morning rush drives us crazy

The daily scramble to get children dressed, fed, and out the door is a familiar source of stress for families worldwide. This frenetic routine, often characterized by raised voices and forgotten homework, feels uniquely maddening. The tension stems from a fundamental clash between the rigid, clock-driven demands of the adult world and the natural, fluid time perception of childhood.

Philosopher Pierre Vesperini highlights this disconnect, explaining that children exist in a "thick present," immersed in their immediate activity, whether it's meticulously tying shoes or pondering a cereal box. Adult time, in contrast, is linear and future-oriented, focused on the next deadline—the school bell. This creates an inherent conflict as parents try to forcibly synchronize these two incompatible experiences of time.

Feminist author Titiou Lecoq points to a practical solution often borne from necessity: radically advanced preparation. This involves completing tasks like packing bags, choosing clothes, and preparing breakfast items the night before. The goal is to carve out a buffer, creating a pocket of calm within the morning timeline. By front-loading the logistical work, the actual morning can accommodate a child’s slower pace, allowing for minor delays without triggering a crisis. This strategy is less about efficiency and more about creating psychological space, reducing the friction that turns mornings into a battleground. The aim is to replace urgency with a more manageable, and perhaps even peaceful, start to the day.
