SAN DIEGO -- A growing number of parents are wrestling with a tough question: how do you keep a child safe without holding them back? The answer often lies in understanding the line between protection and overprotection.
Overprotective parenting, sometimes called "helicopter parenting," involves hovering over a child's every move. Parents might step in to solve minor problems, prevent any risk of failure, or shield kids from disappointment. While the intent is loving, experts say it can backfire. Children raised in this environment may struggle with decision-making, lack resilience, and feel anxious when faced with challenges on their own.
So how can parents support their child without limiting independence? The key is to shift from managing to guiding. Instead of fixing a forgotten homework assignment, let the child face the natural consequence at school. Instead of choosing their friends or activities, offer advice and then step back. Allow for small, manageable risks -- like walking to a neighbor's house or ordering food at a restaurant -- that build confidence over time.
Another important step is to teach problem-solving skills. When a child comes to you with a problem, ask open-ended questions like "What do you think you should do?" This encourages them to think critically rather than rely on you for answers.
Finally, parents should model healthy coping with failure. If you react calmly to your own mistakes, your child learns that setbacks are normal and not something to fear. The goal is not to remove all obstacles, but to give children the tools to climb over them on their own.
