Parents today are drowning in what experts call "time confetti" -- those tiny, scattered pockets of time that get sprinkled across the day. Instead of having solid blocks for work, chores, or family, parents find themselves juggling five minutes here and ten minutes there. They try to answer emails while stirring dinner, help with homework while folding laundry, or squeeze in a quick call before the school pickup. The result is a constant state of partial attention that leaves everyone feeling shortchanged.
This fragmented schedule makes it nearly impossible to truly bond with children. A child who wants to share a story about their day often gets a parent who is half-listening while mentally checking off the next task. Over time, kids stop trying. They learn that Mom or Dad is always busy, even when physically present. The parent, meanwhile, feels guilty and exhausted, never fully completing anything or truly connecting with anyone.
The fix is not about doing more. It is about protecting bigger chunks of time. That might mean setting a hard rule of no phones during dinner, or designating a 30-minute window each evening for uninterrupted play. It also means accepting that some tasks will not get done. The laundry can wait. The email can be answered tomorrow. What cannot wait is the chance to look your child in the eye and let them know they matter more than the next scattered minute on your list.
