A new survey from Pew Research Center reveals a stark reality for millions of working parents: they are grateful for their jobs, but feel those jobs are stealing the hours they need for their families and themselves. The report paints a picture of a workforce stretched thin, with parents reporting a chronic shortage of time that leaves them feeling like they are failing both at work and at home.
The study found that a majority of working parents say their job provides them with a sense of identity and financial security. However, this positive sentiment is overshadowed by a deep frustration. Nearly half of all working parents surveyed said they do not have enough time to spend with their children. The problem is even more acute for mothers, who are more likely than fathers to report feeling rushed and overwhelmed.
Beyond parenting, the survey highlights a broader sacrifice. Many working parents say they have too few hours for hobbies, exercise, friendships, and even basic self-care. The constant juggling act leads to a feeling of being in a losing battle, where no area of life gets the full attention it deserves. The data suggests that the modern workplace, with its demands for constant availability and long hours, is fundamentally at odds with the realities of raising a family. For many, the trade-off between a paycheck and personal time feels increasingly unsustainable.
