Sibling rivalry has existed since the dawn of time. From Cain and Abel to your own kids fighting over the last piece of cake, it's a tale as old as family itself. But in today’s fast-paced, tech-driven world, sibling relationships are facing a whole new set of challenges.
Gone are the days when kids fought over whose turn it was to sit in the front seat. Now, battles are waged over screen time, social media status, and who gets the latest gaming console. So, what’s fueling this modern-day sibling rivalry, and how can parents step in without making things worse? Let’s break it down.
One child might feel like their sibling gets preferential treatment, even if you’re trying to be fair. And let’s be real—sticking to digital time limits is easier said than done.
It’s no longer just about who’s taller, faster, or gets better grades—now, it's about who’s more "popular" online. And that’s a tough battle for self-esteem.
If one sibling is naturally better at gaming, the other might feel inferior. Worse yet, if they’re playing together in cooperative games, the better player might constantly criticize or “carry” the other, leading to frustration and conflict.
Even watching parents spend too much time on their own devices (guilty!) can create resentment. If a child feels they’re constantly being told to get off screens while their parents are glued to theirs, it fuels frustration and disconnect.
Sound familiar? That’s because technology privileges evolve over time. Younger siblings often get access to tech at an earlier age simply because times have changed, which can be frustrating for older siblings who had stricter rules growing up.
Create a tech schedule if needed so there’s no confusion about who gets the tablet or gaming console and when.
Make tech a shared experience rather than a battleground.
Also, remind them that what they see online isn’t always real—filters, edits, and exaggerated highlights can create unrealistic comparisons.
If one child gets a new device, have a conversation with the other about why instead of just brushing it off. Transparency can prevent resentment from brewing.
As parents, our role isn’t to eliminate rivalry completely—that’s impossible. Instead, we need to guide our kids in using technology in a way that strengthens, rather than weakens, their relationships.
By setting clear rules, promoting teamwork, teaching digital wellness, and encouraging offline bonding, you can help your kids navigate sibling rivalry in this tech-driven world without losing their connection—or your sanity.

Sibling rivalry is a natural part of growing up, but technology shouldn't fuel more conflict. Set clear boundaries and encourage teamwork to foster healthy relationships among siblings.

I completely agree. Technology can complicate sibling dynamics, but establishing boundaries and promoting collaboration can make a big difference in nurturing their bond.
